2010 Paint Out

The 2011 “Paint Out” is a one day event that is part of the Escalante Canyons Art Festival. In the plein air competition, artists have several days to accomplish a finished product; in a “Paint Out” artists have only a few hours to finish. It is a quick paint, visual impression, where catching the moment is the reward, not drawn out, studied, sometimes "belabored" art product. The limitation is that all the artists paint together in the same location, but can choose different views. Paintings do not have to framed for this event, only artists REGISTERED for the plein air competition are eligible to enter the paint out. Paintings done at the paint out are also eligible as entries into the plein air competition.

Location: Slot Canyons Inn, 5 miles west of Escalante. Time: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Lunch is available from the new North Creek Grill (part of Slot Canyons Inn) Please RSVP when you sign in for the event.

Judging: 5:00 PM when the participating artists gather and vote for their favorite entry who wins the prize of $250.00. Previous “Paint Out” winners are not eligible for two years, like in the general competition. We will award that prize and ribbon at the ARTISTS RECEPTION on Thursday evening.

Our first “Annual” Paint Out was a great success in spite of a nasty thunderstorm that appeared in the afternoon.

Artists painted from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, then the artists who participated, voted for their favorite painting of the day. Ben Sowards of Southern Utah University was the winner of the 2010 “Paint Out”.
